Panning Proves Concentrators Success            Mon 17 Jan 05

At the end of the day, panning is the all revealing process. No matter what, panning brings you face to face with the truth. This photo has been enhanced to better reveal the contents of the pan. The grey material is a naturally occurring heavy mineral oxide which you normally expect to encounter in gold bearing deposits. The bright spots are mercury.

Mercury is a heavy metal which melts at a very low temperature which is why it is usually seen as a liquid. Small amounts occur naturally in certain soils but the concentration in the photo, about a teaspoon full in a cup full of soil, is far from normal. If it enters the body it stays there causing insanity and death. It is the subject of huge concern to the mining industry and environmentalists.

The mining industry, very wisely, is restricting the use of mercury and has developed new methods to replace it. I will write about that in the next newsletter. The mercury that remains in sediments and water ways, must be cleaned up.

The mercury in this photo has been captured during 20 minutes of normal processing using ecologics gold concentrator. It demonstrates that mining using this equipment, while producing a direct benefit to the miner, clearly provides a substantial benefit to the environment and all us who depend on it for our continued existence.
